Woman who tried to flee without paying £2,100 bill arrested at airport

An Irish woman has been arrested at border control after allegedly failing to pay her £2,100 hotel bill.

The unidentified woman appeared in court today in Gran Canaria after she stopped responding to requests for payment from the hotel where she had been staying with her family.

The unnamed hotel in San Bartolome de Tirajana said she had booked an 11-night stay for two adults and a minor at the all-inclusive resort on a bank card.

But when they tried to charge the card at the end of the family’s holiday,it was declined.

A National Police spokesperson said: ‘Hotel staff repeatedly attempted to contact the person who had made the reservation in order to resolve the situation.

‘Although she initially stated that she intended to make the payment, claiming she was unable to access her bank card because she was already at the airport, she ultimately ceased all communication without paying the outstanding amount.’
